These fences are a tangible reminder of our shared history and help to create a sense of place and identity. As we move into the next section about restoring and repairing historic wood fences, it is important to understand the steps involved in bringing these fences back to their original splendor.

Restoring and Repairing Historic Wood Fences

When restoring and repairing historic wood fences, it’s important to first assess the damage and decay present. This will help determine the extent of the restoration needed and guide the repair process.

Choosing the right materials is crucial to ensuring an accurate and long-lasting restoration, as using incorrect or low-quality materials can compromise the fence’s integrity.

While some DIY enthusiasts may be tempted to tackle the restoration themselves, hiring a professional with experience in historic wood fence restoration can ensure a high-quality and accurate restoration that will preserve the fence’s historic value.

Assessing Damage and Decay

Start by assessing the extent of damage and decay in order to determine the necessary restoration steps for historic wood fencing. This initial assessment is crucial to understand the condition of the fence and develop an effective restoration plan.

To assess damage and decay, consider the following:

  • Visual inspection: Look for signs of rot, insect infestation, and structural weakness.
  • Probe the wood: Use a screwdriver or awl to test the wood’s integrity.
  • Moisture testing: Determine the moisture content of the wood to evaluate decay risk.
  • Documentation: Take notes and photographs to track the damage and prioritize repairs.

Assessing damage and decay allows you to identify the areas that require immediate attention and plan for future maintenance. Once you have a clear understanding of the fence’s condition, you can move on to choosing the right materials for restoration.

Choosing the Right Materials

To choose the appropriate materials for restoration, it’s important to consider the desired aesthetic and long-term durability. When it comes to historic wood fencing, there are various restoration techniques available that can bring back its original beauty.

One key factor to keep in mind is the environmental impact of the materials you choose. Opt for materials that are sustainable and eco-friendly, such as reclaimed wood or composite materials made from recycled materials. These options not only preserve the historic charm of the fence but also contribute to a greener environment.

Additionally, consider the durability of the materials to ensure that your restored fence will withstand the test of time. By choosing the right materials, you can achieve a visually stunning and long-lasting result.

Transitioning to the next section about hiring a professional or DIY restoration, it’s crucial to assess your skills and resources before making a decision.

Hiring a Professional or DIY Restoration

Consider whether you should hire a professional or tackle the restoration project yourself. When it comes to historic wood fencing, there are a few factors to keep in mind.

First and foremost, cost comparison is important. Hiring a professional can be more expensive upfront, but they have the expertise and tools to get the job done efficiently. On the other hand, doing it yourself can save money, but it may require more time and effort to complete the project.

Speaking of time commitment, hiring a professional can be a time-saver as they will handle all the details and ensure a high-quality restoration. However, if you enjoy hands-on work and have the necessary skills, doing it yourself can be a rewarding experience.

As you consider your options, keep in mind the importance of preserving and restoring these classic styles.

Now, let’s move on to design and styling tips for historic wood fences.

Design and Styling Tips for Historic Wood Fences

When it comes to choosing the right design for your property, consider the architectural style of your home and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve.

Adding decorative elements can enhance the charm and character of your historic wood fence, such as ornamental post caps or lattice work.

To create a cohesive look, it’s important to match the style of your fence to the architecture of your home, whether it’s a Victorian, Craftsman, or Colonial design.

Choosing the Right Design for Your Property

Looking for the perfect design for your property? When choosing a design for your historic wood fence, it’s important to consider both the size of your property and your budget constraints.

If you have a smaller property, a simple and streamlined fence design can create an illusion of spaciousness. On the other hand, if you have a larger property, you can opt for more elaborate designs with intricate details to add grandeur and elegance.

It’s also essential to keep your budget in mind when selecting a design. Some designs may require more materials and labor, which can increase the overall cost.

By carefully considering your property size and budget, you can find a design that perfectly complements your property and fits within your financial means.

Now, let’s explore how you can enhance your historic wood fence by adding decorative elements.

Adding Decorative Elements

Now that you have chosen the right design for your property, it’s time to add those finishing touches that will truly make your historic wood fence stand out.

By incorporating decorative elements, you can enhance the aesthetics of your fence and create a charming and inviting atmosphere.

Consider adding decorative post caps or finials to the top of your fence posts, giving them an elegant and sophisticated look. You can also install decorative trim or lattice panels to add depth and visual interest to your fence.

These small details can make a big difference in the overall appearance of your fence and help it blend seamlessly with the surrounding architecture.

Speaking of which, in the next section, we will explore how to match different fence styles to your property’s unique architectural features.

Matching Fence Styles to Architecture

To match your fence to the architecture of your property, consider selecting a style that complements the unique features of your home. By choosing a fence that matches the architectural style of your property, you can enhance its overall aesthetic appeal and create a sense of harmony.

Whether your home is Victorian, Craftsman, or Colonial, there are historical fence styles that can beautifully complement its design. Matching fence styles to your architecture not only adds visual interest but also contributes to the historical preservation of your property. By installing a fence that is true to the time period, you are honoring the craftsmanship and heritage of your home.

So, take the time to research and select a fence style that aligns with your property’s architecture, and you’ll create a cohesive and visually pleasing look.

In the next section, we will discuss the maintenance and care required for historic wood fences.

Maintenance and Care for Historic Wood Fences

To properly maintain and care for your historic wood fence, there are three key points to consider.

First, regular cleaning and inspection are essential to prevent dirt buildup and identify any potential issues.

Second, applying protective finishes, such as sealants or paint, can help protect the wood from weathering and UV damage.

Lastly, it’s important to address any pest and rot issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the longevity of your fence.

Taking these steps will help preserve the classic style and beauty of your historic wood fence for years to come.

Regular Cleaning and Inspection

Make sure you regularly clean and inspect your historic wood fencing to preserve and restore its classic style. Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity of your fence and prevent common problems such as rot, insect infestation, and weather damage.

Start by removing any debris or dirt using a soft brush or a gentle spray of water. Inspect the wood for any signs of damage, such as cracks or splinters, and repair them promptly to prevent further deterioration. Additionally, check for any loose or missing boards and secure or replace them as needed.

By taking these simple steps, you can maintain the beauty and integrity of your historic wood fencing.

Next, we will discuss the importance of applying protective finishes to further protect your fence and enhance its appearance.

Applying Protective Finishes

Applying protective finishes is essential for maintaining the longevity and aesthetic appeal of your old wooden fence. By following best practices, you can ensure that your fence remains protected from the elements and retains its original charm. Here are three key steps to consider when applying protective finishes:

  1. Clean and Prep: Before applying any finish, make sure to thoroughly clean your fence and remove any dirt, debris, or old coatings. This will ensure proper adhesion and a smooth finish.

  2. Choose the Right Finish: Select a protective finish that is specifically designed for wooden fences. This could include options like clear sealers, wood stains, or paints. Consider factors such as durability, weather resistance, and the desired look for your fence.

  3. Apply with Care: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for applying the finish, ensuring even coverage and avoiding drips or streaks. Use a brush, roller, or sprayer depending on the type of finish chosen.

By taking these steps, you can protect your old wooden fence and enhance its beauty for years to come.

Once you have applied the protective finishes, it’s important to address any pest and rot issues that may arise to maintain the integrity of your fence.

Dealing with Pest and Rot Issues

If you’re dealing with pest and rot issues, it’s important to address them promptly to maintain the integrity of your old wooden fence.

Pest control is crucial in preserving the beauty and functionality of historic wood fencing. Termites, carpenter ants, and beetles can cause significant damage to the wood, leading to structural instability and decay.

Regular inspections and treatments can help prevent infestations and keep your fence in top shape.

Additionally, rot can occur when moisture gets trapped in the wood, creating the perfect environment for fungal growth. To combat this, ensure proper drainage around your fence and consider applying wood preservatives to protect against moisture damage.

By taking these proactive measures, you can extend the lifespan of your historic wood fence and enjoy its timeless charm for years to come.

Conclusion

In conclusion, preserving and restoring historic wood fences is crucial to maintaining the charm and beauty of classic styles. By understanding the different types of historic wood fences and the importance of their preservation, you can ensure their longevity and historical significance.

Restoring and repairing these fences not only enhances their aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the overall character of a property. With design and styling tips, you can create an authentic and visually appealing fence that stands the test of time.

The service and the work that was done was exceptional. We needed to replace three very old (and very heavy) garage doors in a home that was built in 1960. There were a number of challenges along the way and each one was met professionally and in a timely manner. Lisa was an excellent communicator and highly responsive. Kevin did an extraordinary job with a fairly involved installation. His 'can do' attitude was very refreshing and reassuring. As noted, the final result was terrific. The pricing was VERY reasonable and very fair. The install was completed two days ago and I have already received compliments from the neighbors!

On Oct. 31 my electric gate stopped working and I called Alpha Gate and Door and talked to Lisa. She was great and based on my symptoms said she thought it was the battery and she would send Kealan out the next day. He came and replaced the battery with a 12 v 55ah battery. I asked him to rehang my reflector light on my neighbors new fence so the motion sensor would work. It had worked fine prior to that being taken down. He did that and it worked for a minute and then stopped. He rewired it and it worked once and he left. The next day I noticed the sensor was not working but I didn’t really care because my dog is too small to trigger it. I was charged $448 -$169 for the service call, $249 for the battery and $30 to rewire the sensor. I work exclusively from home as an attorney and never even use the gate during the week. A few weeks later the gate stopped operation completely and I called on Dec. 6. Lisa said she would send Kealan out. He called me and I said the gate would not open at all, the sensor was not working and the sensor was making a nonstop buzzing noise. He arrived fairly late in the day and I saw him pull into my driveway but he did not come to my door and went straight to the gate. I immediately went out there and I saw when he opened the cover that the battery charger lights were not on. He was in a very bad mood and starting ripping the battery out and said I needed a new battery. I said I guess it was because the battery charger wasn’t plugged in. I was not mad about it because that can happen to anyone. He got really mad at that point, I guess because I knew what had happened. He demanded to know whether I had unplugged it, grabbed a huge battery that would not even fit in my unit, then declared the charger had “allegedly” not been plugged in. As he was trying to force the battery in and was slamming everything around, I asked him if he had a smaller battery. He said no, it was whomever installed my gate opener’s fault because the antenna was on the left and they were usually on the right. He continued to try to force it but could not get the cover on. So he gave up and said he would come back Monday with a smaller battery. I assumed the sensor was not working because the battery had died. I heard nothing from anyone the following Monday and had had it so I called Lisa and yelled and told her the way Kealan had behaved and when was the battery actually going to be installed. She said she would talk to Kealan and I said do you have anybody else who is not a jackass who could come instead. She said she would investigate and call me back. She never called me back and apparently the next day around lunch Kealan snuck onto my property, did not tell me he was there, and put in another battery and texted me the gate was now working. I went outside to try it and the remote was not working at all. I have programmed remotes many times (I have done a lot of products liability work and handled cases with complex machinery failures and deposed a lot of engineers so I am not unfamiliar with this type of equipment) and checked it and the receiver was getting the signal from the transmitter but the control board was not opening the gate.So I called Lisa, explained he had come but not told me he was there, and that the remote was not opening the gate. I also apologized for yelling at her the day before because it was not her fault. She said she would tell him. After that call I remembered there is a reset button on the Patriot control board so I went out and pushed it and that caused the remote to work so I called Lisa and said it was working. The new battery is smaller than the one he had originally put in and retails for about $95. The motion sensor still does not work, I have done jumping jacks in front of of it to know avail. I am not bothering to call again about that because Kealan would probably get really mad again. He does NOT like his competence put into question. You decide if $249 is a fair markup on a $95 battery.

I highly recommend Alpha Gate & Door Company! The entire process was incredibly quick and professional! I spoke with Lisa (she’s amazing and extremely knowledgeable) on Tuesday and she came out Wednesday with a recommendation to replace the gate opener that was faulty and couldn’t handle the weight of my gate. I received the reasonable quote the same day and their technician, Keelan, was at my house on Friday of the SAME WEEK to install. Keelan was just as courteous and professional as Lisa and did an amazing job! The install was perfect and pristine! I’ve tried working with other companies and honestly they are hands down the best! If there were 10 stars available, I would give them 10!
Thank you Alpha team!

Alpha Gate & Door recently replaced our 3-gate system thats used by over 250 residents and visitors on a daily basis.

Terry was excellent in guiding us from the first visit to the final inspection, including his experiences on what to expect and where any likely issues would occur. With a large property, that was critical to avoiding problems that could pop up.

The crews, clean up and invoicing were all done professionally.

We would strongly recommend Alpha Gate & Door for your gate access needs.
